'In Arcadia' (below) was created in 1996. The bees, like puppets, enact a memory of a painful interaction with a friend. Through the process of drawing, I went deeply into the dynamics of the situation, facing them squarely within myself. This arena became a space in which the pain could be alchemised into beauty: a mysterious process that happens in the Heart.
Below is a 12th Century Romanesque wooden carving of the 'Christ in Majesty' at the Chapelle de La Trinité in the Pyrenees in Southern France. This crucifix embodies the perfect union of human suffering with the Mercy and Compassion of the Divine. This is alchemy. This is how the Body of Christ is formed: uniting Heaven and Earth through the transfigured human vessel.
